THE PROBLEM:
- House Prices on Arran are 40% above house prices in the rest of North Ayrshire.
- Rented property on Arran is priced 40% above North Ayrshire and is rarely available.
- Price and availability make it difficult to retain or attract people to live and work on Arran.
THE EFFECTS:
- Many people living and working on Arran in substandard and temporary accommodation, causing real hardship.
- There are critical labour shortages in all sectors from health & social care to tourism. These shortages are straining essential services and business growth.
- We are unable to house our local workforce who are forced to leave causing depopulation and a real loss of potential to our Island.
- A decreasing young population puts pressure on the viability of our schools which are at the heart of our communities.
WHAT CAN BE DONE:
Build affordable houses for rent and offer self - build plots for residents and people coming to work on the Island.
The Arran Development Trust’s planning application to build the first phase of 18 affordable rental homes at Rowarden, Lamlash has been approved with construction due to start. The second planning application process to provide 25 serviced self-build affordable plots is now underway, with a final decision due shortly.
